 Continuing Professional Development

CPD training in the form of one-day workshops aimed at counselling/psychotherapist practitioners and newly qualified counsellors/psychotherapists. The workshops will be a blend of experiential activities and taught elements with the aim of understanding the link between theory and practice. The workshops are also available to counselling/psychotherapy students but are not intended as a substitution for core training.

I am currently working on designing new workshops to deliver in 2024.

below is a list of past workshops which can be delivered in-person or online, please contact me if you are interested in booking any of these, minimum group is 8 people

The energetic structure of the Organism

A one-day workshop exploring the individual's potentialities for growth and development through the person-centred theory of the organism and the actualising tendency.

Drawing from biological and psychological perspectives to help clarify what is meant by organism we will explore how our senses inform us of the world around us through the nervous system and examine our way of responding to both external and internal stimuli through our thoughts, bodies and emotions.

We will examine how our self-concept can distort and deny our organismic experience through conditions of worth and introjected values and how this creates our own unique perspective of the world around us, our own reality. As counsellors we will explore how being more in tune with our organismic experiencing can assist us to be more present in the therapeutic relationship and work more effectively with these distortions and denials in order to assist and facilitate a client to experience a more congruent and authentic way of being.

The aim of the workshop is to link theory to practice through a mixture of taught elements, discussion, and experiential activities and to relate this to the therapeutic relationship and counselling process.

The person-centred approach to working with transference and defence mechanisms

A one-day workshop exploring the person-centred attitude and approach to the Psychodynamic concept of defence mechanisms and the phenomena of transference. Rogers acknowledged the existence and function of defences but he understood there to be only two main defences; denial and distortion.

In Psychodynamic theory, transference and countertransference are of central importance to the therapeutic alliance. We will explore what the PCA perspective is of these phenomena and how to work effectively with them.

The aim of the workshop is to link theory to practice through a mixture of taught elements, discussion, and experiential activities and to relate this to the therapeutic relationship and counselling process.

Deconstructing congruence

Congruence, genuineness and transparency are often used to mean the same thing but...

is congruence the same as genuineness? is transparency the same as congruence? does genuineness mean transparency?

in separating these three distinct terms we discover a common misinterpretation and

misunderstanding of what congruence is.

The aim of the workshop is to gain an accurate theoretical and practical understanding of congruence.

We will link theory to practice through a mixture of taught elements, discussion, and experiential activities and relate this

to the therapeutic relationship and counselling process.

Non-directivity revisited

In theory, a non-directional approach is a simple idea that can be easily understood. It is a way of ensuring client autonomy and self-determination and of reducing the inherent power differential between counsellor and client. It is a way of supporting the client to develop an internal locus of evaluation and to learn to trust their organismic valuing process.
So why is non-directionality one of the most difficult concepts

of person-centred theory to put into practice?
What does a non-directional approach rely on in practice and

how can it be applied to all clients?
We’ll be revisiting the theory behind non-directionality and why in the classical person-centred approach it is such a central
aspect of practice.

Presence - A way of being

Carl Rogers emphasised the need for the counsellor to be present within the therapeutic relationship, and that the person-centred counsellor does not rely on techniques in therapy but on integrating the core conditions into what he called “A Way of Being.”

A practical and experiential workshop exploring our experiences of and our relationship to the core conditions and how we can continue our personal efforts to integrate them into our basic attitudes, beliefs, values and practice.

Power

A personal exploration of our individual experiences of power and how these experiences have shaped our self-concepts and our relationships. How do we experience power in our lives? How do we consider issues of power within the counselling relationship? What are power structures and how does an awareness of this inform us in our personal lives and as counsellors?

Is power always to be considered negative or is there another way of thinking about it? What of “power from within” or personal power? How comfortable are we in considering ourselves as powerful?

An explorative workshop focusing on our own experience of power through individual and small group activity.
